Really basic question - can I store GAEs and SAEs where they are touching?
I have a plastic mint roll of SAEs and it's missing a few at the top. I happen to have a couple 1/10th GAEs that would fit in there instead of being loose.
Is it OK to store them together like that, touching? It seems like an obvious answer, but as soon as I do it someone will tell me not to because of whatever. |
Re: Really basic question - can I store GAEs and SAEs where they are touching?
The one and only concern I would have with that is that the 1/10's are going to slide around when moved. Depending on the purity of the 1/10's this may mar their faces. The silver won't get futzed unless you shake the things like a margarita. FWIW, I actually have a 1/10 krugerrand floating on top of a full mint roll (there's room for the smaller coin). I prefer to keep the higher purity gold in capsules.
If you're concerned about chemical reactions or something, that is a non-issue. |

Wrapping the gold coins in a bit of tissue before packing them in with the SAEs should prevent wear/scratch/ding damage.
FYI, dissimilar metals in contact with each other usally don't cause any problem unless moisture, air and other substances/contaminants are present. This condition forms what is essentially an "electrochemical cell" which results in the corrosion over time of the metals in question. Silver and gold are relatively unreactive in this sense, unlike zinc and copper, which in the form of strips stuck into a lemon (acidic electrolyte) can actually generate surprising amounts of electricity as the metals react/dissolve. You may have noticed what happens to copper clad zinc pennies when the zinc core along with the copper is exposed to the elements (air, moist dirt/dissolved salts) for some time. R. |

Gold coins often have red spots. Those are caused by traces of another metal, usually silver. You wouldn't think metals would interbreed, but silver will. Stuff your empty spots with something else.
